Blood Orange Returns With “The Field” Featuring Caroline Polachek & Daniel Caesar

Devonté Hynes, the visionary artist behind Blood Orange, has officially made his long-awaited return with a lush new single, “The Field.” Released today, the track marks Hynes’ first Blood Orange release in over three years and features an impressive roster of collaborators, including Caroline Polachek, Daniel Caesar, Eva Tolkin, and Tariq Al-Sabir.

Written and produced entirely by Hynes himself, “The Field” also samples The Durutti Column’s ambient classic “Sing to Me,” blending nostalgic tones with modern vocal textures. The song arrives alongside a stunning self-directed music video that follows Hynes and friends wandering through the serene, green landscapes of rural England—a cinematic return fitting for his artistic legacy.

A New Chapter for Blood Orange

“The Field” is Hynes’ first new Blood Orange song since his 2022 Four Songs EP. In the years since, he’s been anything but quiet. In 2023, he scored Paul Schrader’s psychological drama Master Gardener, followed by his original music for the Broadway play Job in 2024. Hynes also co-wrote several tracks on Lorde’s upcoming album Virgin, and will be joining her on tour this fall.

In another surprise move, he collaborated with Turnstile, contributing to their forthcoming album Never Enough. Hynes’ genre-defying presence continues to shape the future of pop, alternative R&B, and indie music.

A Look Back at Blood Orange’s Legacy

Before this return, Hynes’ last full-length Blood Orange project was 2019’s Angel’s Pulse, a genre-blending mixtape celebrated for its raw emotion and experimental edge. His 2018 album Negro Swan remains a modern classic, tackling themes of identity, trauma, and transformation with unflinching honesty.

Fans of Hynes have long admired his ability to seamlessly merge R&B, ambient, classical, and pop music into a signature sound—and “The Field” is a continuation of that sonic evolution.
